Lando Norris edged out fellow driver and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the closing stages of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who seized the championship lead from his teammate by a single point after winning in Mexico City a fortnight back, topped the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver during the running before the sprint shootout set to begin at 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the only other driver in the championship fight, lying with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, finished in 17th place as his Red Bull team opted for a alternative strategy. His teammate the Japanese driver was the only driver to have an incident, albeit lightly, when he spun at corner four during the early running. Tsunoda lost control over the track edges before spinning across the escape zone, and was fortunate to avoid just a minor contact of the fence. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also lost it, at the final moments of the session, rotating twice through the quick descending corner before the last turn on to the main straight. The seven-time champion finished practice in P19, just behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were far ahead of the rest of the field, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber in third, over half a second slower than Piastri's pace. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' Russell and Alpine's Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
