Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
